Try Swearing on Your Next Long Run

The 2010 Ig Nobel Prizes (which  honour achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think) were awarded last week. A trio from UK took the Peace prize for confirming the widely held belief that swearing relieves pain.

This study investigated whether swearing affects cold-pressor pain tolerance (the ability to withstand immersing the hand in icy water).  It was found that swearing increased pain tolerance, increased heart rate and decreased perceived pain compared with not swearing.

However, swearing did not increase pain tolerance in males. HA! Well there you have it, on my next 20 miler I’m going to swear up a storm. It might raise my heart rate but my knees will feel much better.
