Daydreaming at Arundel Castle

May 14, 2011

There aren’t many medieval castles in Canada so it’s always a treat to tour one on vacation. Arundel Castle in West Sussex, England was founded on Christmas Day 1067 and still is the principal residence of the Norfolk family. It must be very odd to have tourists traipsing around your property during the summer months.  Although the sections of the castle open to visitors house all the historic remnants there are still numerous current family pictures in many of the rooms. I wonder how the private wing looks like – with big screen televisions? And clothes thrown about the bedroom floors? I wonder if there is an indoor pool….

While not daydreaming about modern castle-living while touring the residence, I was relaxing in the gardens. I can reach my limit for history and art fairly quickly but I seldom grow tired of nature.  I could have wasted a lot of time in the castles gardens.  Stunning!
